Although it's downright depressing that rockers feel compelled to record standards once they hit a certain age, Scaggs pulls off his ''maturity'' project with grace and style. There's always been plenty of the crooner in Scaggs, and here the leisurely tempos and late-night mood that couch these time-honored classics (''What's New?,'' ''Never Let Me Go,'' ''I Should Care'') suit his laid-back delivery just fine.
