Claws for Celebration

Will Wolverine host the Tonys? Expect Hugh Jackman to show of his musical-theater chops on the awards show

The Tony Awards, always struggling to find a host with Broadway ties who can draw a TV audience, may have found one in mutant superhero and box-office champ Hugh Jackman. According to the New York Post, Tony organizers plan to ask the ''X2: X-Men United'' star to emcee the June 8 ceremony on CBS. They think he's a longshot to say yes, but they do expect him to perform a musical number on the show.

A singing Wolverine? Well, Jackman did win acclaim for his starring role as Curly in the London production of ''Oklahoma!'', which came to Broadway without him and is still running, so he'd probably sing a number from that show. The Aussie actor is set to make his Broadway debut this fall in ''The Boy from Oz,'' a musical about pop composer Peter Allen.

Another big name producers are hoping to book as a performer: Billy Joel. After all, the musical ''Movin' Out,'' with a score consisting of Joel hits, earned 10 nominations this week and is the strongest competitor against ''Hairspray'' for top prizes.
