Dr. Phil had to take some tough love at the 30th annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday. Though he was a favorite to win for Best Talk Show and Best Talk Show Host, he was bested by both ''The Wayne Brady Show'' (whose star, the awards gala's emcee, also won Best Talk Show Host) and ''The View,'' which tied ''Brady'' and won Barbara Walters her first Daytime Emmy since 1974.
Among the soaps, ''General Hospital'' won awards for Best Actor (Maurice Bernard), Best Supporting Actress (Vanessa Marcil), and Best Writing. The Best Drama, however, was ''As the World Turns,'' which also won a Supporting Actor prize for Benjamin Hendrickson. Susan Flannery won her third Best Actress in four years for ''The Bold and the Beautiful.'' ''All My Children'' won Best Directing, and ''Guiding Light'''s Jordi Vilasuso won Best Young Actor.
Other awards included the umpteenth Best Game Show and Best Game Show Host for ''Jeopardy!'' and Alex Trebek. The ceremony, broadcast live on ABC from New York's Radio City Music Hall, also paid tribute to the late Fred Rogers and gave a lifetime achievement award to 90-year-old TV and radio host Art Linkletter.
