Lance Bass may not have gotten to be the first 'N Sync member in outer space, but he was the first one to host an ''American Idol''-like talent show on NBC. Now, bandmate Joey Fatone is following in the ''America's Most Talented Kid'' host's footsteps. He's hosting ''Fame,'' a reality competition inspired by the movie and TV series of the same name, and featuring Debbie Allen (who starred in the movie) as its resident Simon Cowell. The series premieres on May 28.

A recent star of Broadway's ''Rent,'' Fatone will preside over ''Fame'' as it winnows down a set of multitalented aspirants to 24 semifinalists, who will perform over the coming weeks in groups of six. Choreographer Allen will whip them into shape in a hoofer's ''boot camp'' drill, and a panel of judges will pick finalists. The winner, determined by viewers' phone-in votes, will win recording and management contracts, agent representation, and a year-long stint at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy.
