Veteran brass bands like Dirty Dozen and Rebirth have been bringing the funk for years, but Youngblood Brass Band -- possibly the only working band to appeal to readers of both The Fader and Tuba Journal -- put hip-hop at the center of their horny mix. Spawned from a high school band class in Wisconsin in 1995, Youngblood eventually hooked up with Def Jux (El-P, Mr. Lif) sister label Ozone. Drummer-rapper David Henzie Skogan's rhyme style owes some to Midwestern undie-rap neighbor Slug, with a more socially conscious bent. But like all good jazz-schooled players, he knows when to sit out and let the horns blow.
