So, besides an extra 30 minutes per show and an extra three shows a week, what's the difference between this talk show and Green's old one? ''I'm not saying I'm never going to hump a moose again,'' he explains, ''but now there will be time for me to show I'm embarrassed that I'm doing it.'' Green is growing indeed: He's spent hours studying archival footage of late-night legends like Steve Allen and Jack Paar for inspiration. (As a throwback nod, he'll even do ''live'' commercials.) Don't worry -- trademark Tomfoolery (assisted by old pal Glenn Humplik) will still abound. ''We just did a bit where Glenn and I tried to hitchhike from New York to L.A. without using any of our money -- kind of a Charles Kuralt-on-crack thing,'' he says. ''We quit in Natchez, Mississippi, under a bridge at 4 a.m. because we were tired. You don't ever see them quit on 'Survivor,' you know? So that was cool.''
