Even more star-studded drama occurred backstage, where Victoria ''Posh Spice'' Beckham and soccer-playing husband David worked the crowd in matching white-and-diamond outfits; ''Jackass'' star Steve-O wrestled another guest to the floor while MTV cameras rolled; and Paris and Nicky Hilton giggled in a corner with Sharon Osbourne. Osbourne also kept a close eye on her out-of-rehab son Jack, who quietly wandered the crowd with sister Kelly.

Other stars were happy just to be there. ''Maybe because I haven't had dinner and I've got a little bit of champagne in me I can't think of anybody I'm rooting for, but I know I have friends who are up for stuff,'' shrugged amiable ''Friends'' guest star Aisha Tyler. And ''2 Fast 2 Furious''' Paul Walker, who presented an award, admitted, ''I don't even know who's here. They just told me I had to be in my car at such-and-such a time.''

But the backstage parody that got the most laughs was ''Ass Coordinator,'' in which a mustached Vince Vaughn assisted the ''Charlie's Angels'' trio in mastering their most valuable acting tools: their butts. When Lucy Liu called on a Ping Pong-ball-wielding Vaughn to assist in her ''ass blockage'' (it's a movie term, we think), the crowd huddled around the omnipresent TV monitors with all the attentiveness normally paid to a ''Survivor'' finale. We can only hope it ends up on the ''Too Hot for MTV'' collector's edition DVD.
