Not snide. On his band's sublime fourth CD, songwriter-vocalist Eef Barzelay expertly mines melancholy with his gently strummed ballads and literate lyrics for young lovers on Xanax. The mood is calibrated to quietly devastate, and Barzelay knows how to turn a phrase without turning annoyingly arch; when he sings ''lip-synch me a melody,'' he means it.
