Bruno Ganz shines in Wings of Desire, Wim Wenders' dreamy art-house smash (later remade as ''City of Angels''), as a guardian angel who yearns for an earthly existence, while costar Peter Falk notches his most sublime post-''Columbo'' role playing...himself. Shot mostly in beautiful black and white, ''Wings'' is a romance, fairy tale, and existential rumination as well as a love letter to Cold War Berlin: The timeless story remains a gorgeous freeze-frame of bygone life in the funkily decrepit German metropolis. EXTRAS Falk and (mostly) Wenders' commentary provides affectionate insight into the film's remarkably slapdash production, while Ganz, costar Otto Sander, and cowriter Peter Handke contribute lily-gilding observations in the 43-minute featurette ''Angels Among Us.''
