For all the talk we've heard about Colin Farrell's way with women (much of it from Farrell himself), we haven't seen a whole lot of evidence of it onscreen. His recent movies, including ''Daredevil'' and ''Phone Booth,'' have seen him spend more time staring down gun barrels than facing Cupid's arrow. But that could change with his latest casting deal. According to Variety, he'll romance ''2 Fast 2 Furious'' hottie Eva Mendes in ''Ask the Dust,'' a movie based on John Fante's novel of two immigrants in 1930s Hollywood.
The Irish Farrell will play Arturo Bandini, an Italian looking for a writing career and a blonde, blue-eyed girlfriend. The Cuban-American Mendes, who was born in Texas, will play a Mexican named Camilla who's looking for an American husband. Directing the movie will be Robert Towne (''Personal Best'' ), who's better known as one of Hollywood's top screenwriters (''Chinatown'') and script doctors. He wrote the ''Mission: Impossible'' movies (including the upcoming third one) for Tom Cruise, who has returned the favor by coproducing Towne's directing efforts, including 1998's ''Without Limits'' (about Olympic runner Steve Prefontaine) and now, ''Ask the Dust.''
Farrell probably won't have much time for onscreen romance in his next two movies, ''S.W.A.T.'' (opening Aug. 8), and ''Alexander,'' Oliver Stone's soon-to-shoot epic, in which Farrell will play Alexander the Great. After ''Alexander,'' Farrell should be free to shoot ''Dust'' with Mendes, who'll be seen next opposite Antonio Banderas in September's ''Once Upon a Time in Mexico,'' the third movie in Robert Rodriguez' ''El Mariachi'' series.
