The entire TV industry will be waking up at the crack of dawn on July 17, except for ''The Shield'''s Michael Chiklis and ''Malcolm in the Middle'''s Jane Kaczmarek, who'll be rising even earlier. It'll be their job to read the list of this year's Emmy nominees in the top 10 categories, which they'll do at 5:38 a.m. PT from a theater in North Hollywood, in order to reach breakfasting viewers on the East Coast.
Both Chiklis and Kaczmarek are likely to hear their own names read. Chiklis was a surprise Emmy winner last year for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as rogue cop Vic Mackey on FX's ''Shield,'' marking the first lead-role win for a performer on a basic-cable network. This year, while he's no longer a dark horse, he'll face stiffer competition, now that another violent bald antihero, ''The Sopranos''' James Gandolfini, is a contender again. Fox's ''Malcolm'' mom Kaczmarek, nominated three times for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, will likely face such rivals as ''Everybody Loves Raymond'''s Patricia Heaton, ''Will & Grace'''s Debra Messing, and ''Friends''' Jennifer Aniston, who won last year. The 55th annual Emmy ceremony will take place on Sept. 21 at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium and will air live on Fox.
