Strange Days

There are a few things that don't quite make sense this week, beginning with the top DVD debut: Kurt Russell's dirty-cop drama Dark Blue, which was a critically endorsed theatrical dud. Even more surprising was the No. 9 debut of The Hours: Not only does it boast three A-list actresses -- Nicole, Julianne, and Meryl -- but it scored at the box office and won an Oscar. However, the strangest of all was the mysterious chart dominance of Kangaroo Jack. Who knew a larcenous, rap-happy marsupial could have such pull? Actually, this one might have an explanation: School's out, and parents may well be looking for kiddie distraction.

SHANGHAI KNIGHTS (Touchstone, PG-13) Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson get a royal kick out of England in the sequel to their 2000 martial-arts Western.

SPUN (Columbia TriStar, R) A college dropout (Jason Schwartzman) gets more than a high when he makes a deal with the local crystal meth cook and brings a friend (Brittany Murphy) along for the ride.
