''Chicago'' may have made Catherine Zeta-Jones an Oscar-winning criminal, but she's been beaten for the role of a housewife-turned-bankrobber by Cameron Diaz. According to Variety, it's official now, after weeks of indecision, that Diaz will get the lead role opposite Jim Carrey in Columbia's remake of 1977's ''Fun With Dick and Jane.'' The two stars, performing together for the first time since ''The Mask'' helped launch both their careers a decade ago, will take on the roles originally played by Jane Fonda and George Segal, portraying a yuppie couple who turn to armed robbery to maintain their suburban lifestyle.
The film shoots in mid-September under the direction of Barry Sonnenfeld, whose previous movies (''Get Shorty,'' the ''Men in Black'' movies) show a jaundiced eye toward matters of crime and punishment. The screenplay is getting a polish from a couple guys who know plenty about crime comedies: the Coen brothers. Joel and Ethan Coen's comic capers include ''O Brother, Where Art Thou?'' and ''Raising Arizona,'' as well as their upcoming remake of 1955's ''The Ladykillers,'' to star Tom Hanks and Damon Wayans, which also shoots in September.
