Release Date: Jul 08, 2003; Lead Performance: Cibelle

Two South American women yank tradition into the future. Molina, from Buenos Aires, sounds like Stereo-lab's Laetitia Sadier covering Nick Drake, whispering luminous folk tunes amid electronic thickets while acoustic guitars and pianos flicker like votive candles. Cibelle is a young Brazilian working with arty beat-builders Apollo 9 and Morcheeba; her feathery trip-hop samba has a woozy swing, perfect for summer-share rent parties. It's not your mama's bossa nova, but it's just as sultry. Segundo: A - Cibelle: B+
