Reshoots are just about done on the New Zealand set of ''Lord of the Rings: Return of the King'' (in theaters Dec. 17), but the buzz is already well underway. Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins) tells MTV.com that director Peter Jackson has promised this final installment in the trilogy will be ''the most massive war movie ever shown on film.'' Costar Ian McKellan (Gandalf) has warned bloodthirsty fans had also better bring their hankies to opening day, stating ''’Return of the King’ will be part-weepy'' on his official website.
But until Christmas rolls around, hobbit lovers will have plenty of other ''LOTR'' goodies to amuse themselves with. The first DVD for ''Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers'' will be released Aug. 26, to be followed by an extended edition in November, which promises 43 minutes of never-before-seen footage. Here are a few of the goodies to look for on the summer release:
-a short film by Sean Astin (who plays Samwise Gamgee) called ''The Long and Short of It.'' A Sundance 2003 film fest entry, it’s the guest talent that really stands out: Peter Jackson plays a bus driver (he’s also the executive producer); Wood served as an assistant director.
-a video for ''Gollum’s Song'' by Emiliana Torrini. The fledgling singer has been a frequent opening act for Moby and Sting, and once turned down an invitation to join the Sneaker Pimps.
-a 10-minute behind-the-scenes preview of ''Return of the King.'' No word on what we’ll see, but keep your fingers crossed for a peek at Shelob, a monstrous spider who has it in for Frodo and friends, as well as the bloody Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
