SPECIAL OFFER Thalia will hawk for Kmart

Martha Stewart's latest nemesis may not be the U.S. government but the Mexican pop icon Thalia. Like Stewart, the singer-TV actress (full name: Thalia Sodi) has just launched her own line of products at Kmart, one that includes women's clothing as well as home furnishings. On Wednesday at a Kmart in Miami, Thalia made an appearance to kick off sales of the Thalia Sodi Collection, a brand that the discount chain calls ''active, passionate, bold, fashion-conscious, and original.'' ''I've always wanted to broaden my horizons, to grow as a person, artist, and businesswoman,'' she said, according to the Miami Herald.

The collection, designed to appeal to Latina customers who make up a large percentage of Kmart's clientele, includes casualwear, sportswear, shoes, handbags, jewelry, lingerie, bath linens, and bedsheets, in such patterns as ''Sangria,'' ''Peacock Feathers,'' and ''Shadow Safari.'' Kmart initially projected annual sales of $300 million to $600 million, though it's not clear whether the financially troubled discounter is still so optimistic.

The Thalia Sodi Collection has been in the works since last December, but its launch was timed to overlap with the recent release of ''Thalia,'' her first English-language CD. A bonus CD/DVD package is available only to Kmart customers.
