If the Houston Kid's last CD was about looking back at the people and places that shaped him, his new one, Fate's Right Hand, is about looking within -- and not always liking it. In song after song, Rodney Crowell's a middle-aged man struggling to maintain emotional buoyancy. He doesn't always find the answers to ''the riddle of what it is I have to offer to this world,'' but his quest offers up enough angst for the lot of us.
