Bob Newhart snags ''ER'' role. The comedy veteran will play a dramatic role on the NBC series

At 73, comedy veteran Bob Newhart is experiencing the career arc of a hot young star. In addition to his role in ''Legally Blonde 2'' and an upcoming part in ''Elf,''  Newhart will play an ailing architect on three episodes of ''ER'' this fall. The first episode of his arc will air Oct. 30, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Newhart's character, who is losing his sight due to macular degeneration, will develop a friendship with Sherry Springfield's Dr. Susan Lewis, the trade paper reported. Newhart is hardly a stranger to TV, having starred in two Emmy-winning shows: ''The Bob Newhart Show'' and ''Newhart.'' So maybe ''ER'' can change its name to ''Newhart Hospital.''
