Would anyone mind if we just pretended this Labor Day weekend didn't exist? With only ''Jeepers Creepers 2'' opening wide, the box office figures should be predictable -- and low.
Two years ago, MGM premiered the teen horror thriller ''Jeepers Creepers'' to a $15.8 million opening and a $37.9 million total box office take. So, naturally, the studio decided a sequel was absolutely imperative. (Hey, Chris Rock's flop ''Head of State'' made around the same amount; where's the sequel to that one?) The sad truth is that they'll likely be rewarded with another No. 1 opening, as ''Jeepers 2'' should gross $14 million over the long holiday weekend.
Second place will be a race between another horror flick, ''Freddy vs. Jason,'' and the ensemble action film ''S.W.A.T.,'' both of which could snag $10 million. And two nicely performing Disney releases, ''Open Range'' and ''Freaky Friday,'' will score around $9 million each to round out the top five.
Meanwhile, a rash of summer films -- ''Seabiscuit,'' ''American Wedding,'' ''Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle,'' and ''The Italian Job'' -- will all try to inch past the $100 million mark before summer's unofficial end. ''Seabiscuit,'' ''Charlie's Angels,'' and ''The Italian Job'' look like they have it in the bag. But ''American Wedding'' had better hope for a strong surge in RSVPs.
