KID GLOVES Spade's ''Dickie'' should pull out a win

When the biggest box office question is whether any movie will break double digits, you know it's early September. With younguns headed back to school, we're now in the slowest moviegoing period of the year, and that means it's time for ''Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.''

The David Spade comedy about a kiddie actor trying to reclaim his past glory should manage a No. 1 debut this weekend, even as it only earns $8 million or $9 million. That'll push last week's top film, ''Jeepers Creepers 2,'' back to No. 2. A drop of 55 percent would result in a $7 million second weekend and a 10-day total of around $28 million.

Battling for third place will be the hit family comedy ''Freaky Friday'' and the new Heath Ledger supernatural thriller ''The Order,'' which has been delayed for a while and seems relatively low on the buzz scale. Both films should earn about $6 million this weekend.

And rounding out the top five will be either Kevin Costner's ''Open Range,'' Colin Farrell's ''S.W.A.T.,'' or Johnny Depp's ''Pirates of the Caribbean,'' all of which should gross in the $5 million range. And I promise: With the arrival of ''Once Upon a Time in Mexico'' and ''Matchstick Men,'' next week will be much more interesting.
