MARRIAGES

A rep for fashion designer Stella McCartney, 31, had no comment on news that she wed publisher Alasdhair Willis, 31, on a remote Scottish island over the Aug. 30 weekend.... Folk singer-songwriter Janis Ian (''At Seventeen''), 52, and her partner of 14 years, Patricia Snyder, 55, got hitched in Toronto on Aug. 27. It's the second marriage for both.

BIRTHS

Touchdown! Today show correspondent Melissa Stark, 29, and her husband, Mike Lilley, welcomed a 7-pound boy, Michael Jr., on Aug. 22. Stark had left her post as Monday Night Football's popular sideline reporter to have the baby.

NEGOTIATIONS

Nearing an end to its search for a suitor, Vivendi Universal announced on Sept. 2 that it was entering into an agreement to conduct exclusive negotiations with General Electric regarding a potential merger between their respective subsidiaries, Vivendi Universal Entertainment and NBC. The combined entity would make in-laws of Will & Grace, E.T., and Monk.

BUMMER OF A BOOK CLUB

''If you don't have anything nice to say, welcome to the club,'' write Jimmy Fallon and sister Gloria in their pint-size humor read I Hate This Place: The Pessimist's Guide to Life . Penned before Jimmy's SNL stardom (and originally released in a small run), the collection offers ''daily affirmations tailored to destroy any illusions you might have.'' To wit: ''I say tomato, you say tomahtoe. I say potato, you say potahtoe. You're wrong.'' Okay, Fallons, have it your way: This book sucks.

EXITS

Game, set, and match. Just three days into the two-week U.S. Open, slinky tennis twink Anna Kournikova (right), 22, served out her gig filing behind-the-scenes lifestyle reports for the USA Network's coverage of the event. Not ruling out a return invitation, a USA spokesman says that the Russian star's contract in fact covered only the three days. (Which also happens to be the same amount of time Kournikova survives in a typical tournament.)

COURTS

Michigan's exclusive Interlochen Center for the Arts filed suit against piano woman Tori Amos, 40, and Creative Artists Agency on Aug. 26 over a planned Aug. 19 concert that never occurred. Interlochen claims it canceled the show after being unable to finalize terms with the singer and is seeking the return of a $40,000 deposit it says it made to secure her services. Reps for Amos did not return calls for comment.... On Aug. 29, producer Richard Kobritz filed a breach-of-contract suit against Sony Pictures Television and NBC Entertainment, arguing that the companies have left him out of a planned movie update of Stephen King's killer-car novel Christine (Kobritz produced the 1983 film directed by John Carpenter). He seeks $175,000 in damages. Sony declined to comment. An NBC spokesperson called the complaint ''meritless.''... Alabama limo driver Johnny Bonner sued Curtis Jackson (a.k.a. 50 Cent, left), 27, in mid-August, alleging that some of the rapper's security guards assaulted Bonner and commandeered his car while he was chauffeuring them after a March 13 concert in Mobile. Bonner requests unspecified damages. 50 Cent's publicist did not return calls for comment.... Universal, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, MGM, and Orion sued Radioactive Films for copyright infringement on Aug. 27, claiming Radioactive's Hollywood's Hottest series of videos features clips of nude celebrities taken from movies including Titanic and American Pie. The studios seek more than $6 million in damages. Radioactive could not be reached for comment.
