The scoop on Norah Jones' sophomore album

HER STORY Jones' moody jazz-pop debut, ''Come Away With Me'' (2002), was destined to become a modest hit, until grown-ups responded big time to the melodic piano ballad ''Don't Know Why.'' A sold-out international tour, 7 million CDs, and five Grammys (including Album of the Year) later, fame forced Jones out of her low-rent Brooklyn walk-up, but she's still living with her boyfriend -- and bass player -- Lee Alexander in New York City.

HER STATUS The 24-year-old daughter of sitar master Ravi Shankar has begun recording tracks for her follow-up album. ''It will lean a little more toward the country side of her jazz-country thing,'' says collaborator Jesse Harris, who wrote ''Don't Know Why.''

SHE SAYS "I'm kind of anxious to do [another album] because I want to move on so badly,'' Jones told the Associated Press. ''Even if it's a big flop, I just want to go to the next stage.... Some of the [first] record was recorded so long ago I just got sick of it.''

VERDICT Jones will be hard-pressed to match the stunning commercial success of ''Come Away With Me,'' but it seems like making music, not money, is what really matters to this fame-shunning performer.
