Celebrity is not only about high fashion. The stars featured on these pages gave us a glimpse of their real (life) style by posing in cherished outfits -- most not made by couturiers. For Maya Rudolph, a jacket had sentimental value. ''I kept so many things,'' says the SNLer of the clothes inherited from her mother, singer Minnie Riperton. ''I never wore them because I didn't want to lose them.'' For others, the fashions recalled a special event. ''This dress made me feel sexy,'' says Ashanti of the gown she wore to VH1 Divas Duets. Here, a look at the clothes that made the women -- and men. Clarissa Cruz and Alice M. Lee
Memorable turns as a flighty flight attendant in Almost Famous and a cynical makeup artist at a Wal-Mart-esque chain in The Good Girl have made Deschanel's screen persona as distinctive as her name. CLOTHES LINE Earlier this year, the actress attended an L.A. benefit in a blue Petro Zillia frock. She loved the ensemble so much, the label's designer offered to custom-make a version in burgundy corduroy and pink lace. ''The fabric and color were a neat contrast to the design,'' says Deschanel, who adds that the dress' comfort is the reason it's her fave. ''I wear it while I'm vacuuming,'' she jokes. ''It's not unusual for me to wear formal wear around the house.'' COMING UP Starring opposite Will Ferrell in November's Elf.
The star augments his post-Practice career with decidedly un-lawyerly turns in Party Monster (as New York City club king Peter Gatien) and Wonderland (as '70s ex-con David Lind). CLOTHES LINE Though his fashionable wife, actress Shiva Rose, is usually credited with being the clotheshorse of the family, McDermott isn't above picking up a few key pieces on his own: The rock & roll T-shirt he sports is a souvenir from his days on the Wonderland set. ''I had such a good time making the movie,'' says McDermott. ''It will always be one of my great pieces of memorabilia.'' COMING UP A guest spot as a love interest for Will on Will & Grace.
The star of Traffic and Swimfan may have made her on-screen singing debut in MTV's Wuthering Heights last month, but she's studied dance much of her life. And after taking a salsa class at the age of 15, the actress found her true passion. ''It's such a rush for me,'' she says of the Latin-influenced steps. ''You can connect with someone on a very pure level.'' CLOTHES LINE Christensen strikes a sultry pose in her sexy new salsa shoes from Capezio. ''I keep them in my car so I'll always be ready!'' COMING UP 2004's The Perfect Score and Upside of Anger.
The legendary Uberproducer has stayed in the Hollywood picture since the 1950s. CLOTHES LINE Evans was mesmerized by the silver chain worn around the torso of a comely belly dancer (who turned out to be the future wife of Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash). ''I just wanted to see if I could get it off her,'' says Evans of the chain he now wears as a bolo tie. ''I offered her $100 for it and she said no. A week later I offered her $500 and she said uh-uh...so I just handed her ten $100 bills and said, 'Take it off.' It went from her tummy to my neck, and I haven't taken it off for eight years.'' COMING UP Voicing and exec-producing Kid Notorious, an animated parody of Hollywood for Comedy Central.
