TOO SHADY Trice hits a wall by trying to be too much like Marshall Mathers
Credits
Release Date: Sep 23, 2003; Lead Performance: Obie Trice; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
B+
With guests like Eminem, 50 Cent, and Dr. Dre, Obie Trice could probably rhyme the phone book and his debut disc would still go platinum. But Cheers isn't quite that rote: Trice is a talented MC, and the synth-funk production by Mr. Mathers, Dre, and Timbaland is top-notch. The problem is that Trice chooses to stay in the shadow of his Detroit compadre, crassly following the blueprint of Eminem's last disc -- from the goofy single ''Got Some Teeth'' to the I-hate-my-mom confessional cut (''Don't Come Down'') to the Murder Inc. dis track (''S--- Hits the Fan''). Just the latest model to roll off the Motor City assembly line.
