William Steig, creator of the 1990 children's book about a not-so-ogreish ogre (the basis for the Oscar-winning Shrek) and a presence on the pages of The New Yorker for more than 70 years, ''transformed the idea of what a cartoon could be,'' says his New Yorker editor, Lee Lorenz. Steig, who died at 95 Oct. 3 in Boston, ''gave people a new way of seeing themselves through his work -- a remarkable achievement.'' -- SB
