'Rock'-Toberfest

That's right, kids: Jack Black schooled The Rock. Buoyed by eardrum-shattering critical praise, School of Rock brought in $19.6 million and became Black's first No. 1 opening vehicle while bumping The Rundown out of the top spot. At the same time, School's indie-veteran director, Richard Linklater, has all but matched the combined box office take of his seven previous features. Denzel Washington's sweaty crime saga Out of Time debuted nicely in second, while two other freshmen, Wonderland (No. 45) and The Station Agent (No. 55), boasted the week's strongest per-screen averages. To honor all this week's winners, let us raise our goblets of rock!
