Felicitous Split

Scott Foley blames fame for his divorce. Jennifer Garner's ex says a third party wasn't the cause for their breakup

Michael Vartan is officially off the hook. Though eyebrows were raised when "Alias" spy girl Jennifer Garner began dating series costar Vartan shortly after splitting with husband Scott Foley, her ex has stepped forward to say fame, not adultery, was the deal breaker.

''Nobody else was involved,'' Foley, 31, told TV Guide. ''Jennifer became a huge celebrity. She became a huge star, and she deserved everything she got. There was no other relationship, there was no infidelity, nothing. People get divorced, you know?'' The couple's divorce papers, filed by Garner on May 9, cited irreconcilable differences.

Foley, who met his ex-wife when she guest-starred on his WB series ''Felicity,'' admitted that watching Garner's ascent to the A-list has cooled his passion for achieving fame on his own. "I've seen the demands that it requires, and I don't have the patience for that," he said.

Given that Foley's last TV series, NBC's ''A.U.S.A.,'' flopped miserably and he's currently starring in ''The Violet Hour'' on Broadway, it seems fairly certain that he will be evading superstardom, at least for the time being.
