Generation X will be relieved to learn that the characters from their favorite '80s movie have gotten old and gray right along with them. The USA Network is developing a sequel to the 1984 John Hughes comedy ''Sixteen Candles'' that will reveal what's become of Sam, Long Duk Dong, and Farmer Ted 16 years after the original.

In the first film, Sam (teen icon Molly Ringwald), is shocked to learn that her parents have forgotten her 16th birthday. She spends most of the movie mooning over senior hunk Jake (Michael Schoeffling) and avoiding the lovelorn Ted ("The Dead Zone"'s Anthony Michael Hall) and exchange student-turned-party animal Dong ("ER"'s Gedde Watanabe). Future stars John and Joan Cusack also costar in the film.

No word on what the plot might entail or whether any of the original actors will be invited to reprise their roles, though Hall seems a likely candidate (USA also produces "The Dead Zone"). We can only hope that whoever shows up leaves their legwarmers and Wham! tapes at home.
