Hmmm, where have we heard this before: echo-drenched guitars, bass lines that don't just beef up the beat but actually advance the melody, and a pouty would-be existentialist singing about how ''love and death are always on my mind''? Their sound may be a secondhand version of lush '80s dream pop by such cultish U.K. bands as the Chameleons, House of Love, and Echo and the Bunnymen, but Montreal quartet the Stills succeed at distilling their influences into an inviting update.
