Power 2003

Power Tools

There's an old saying we just made up: You're only as powerful as your dry cleaner. To that end, here's a list of what keeps our movers and shakers fueled and starched.

MOST POWERFUL DRUGSTORE Longs Rexall Square Drugs (Beverly Hills) Where the elite meet to treat...their bunions. ''We get a few,'' the store manager says of celeb clientele. ''I didn't realize we had that much power.'' Please... you're a drugstore. In Hollywood.

MOST POWERFUL MOBILE HOME MAKER Anderson Mobile Estates Ron Anderson customizes movie-set trailers for everyone from Will Smith to J. Lo. (Among the weirder requests: thumb scanners for the bedroom.) For Smith's stay on I, Robot, Anderson has given him a two-story rig with a built-in recording studio. Says Anderson: ''I can't imagine anybody that has a $20 mil house spending the majority of their life in a $4,000 trailer.'' Yeah, don't you hate that?

MOST POWERFUL DRY CLEANER Mendel's Hollyway Cleaners (West Hollywood) Everybody who's anybody gets their pants pressed here. But the real measure of power? When EW called, the reply was ''Can I call you back? I'm in the middle of a meeting.''

MOST POWERFUL COMFORT FOOD Grilled Cheese Night at Campanile (Los Angeles) Even studio suits get the blues -- which means it's time for some cheese and sympathy. But rejection is still an issue: A seat at the weekly fromage-fest is often harder to get than a three-picture deal.

MOST POWERFUL BURGER Father's Office (Santa Monica) Beef eaters from Owen Wilson to Dustin Hoffman belly up for the famed Office Burger. Don't ask for extra arugula: Substitutions and changes are forbidden. The chef has final cut.

MOST POWERFUL INTERIOR DESIGNER Madeline Stuart, of Madeline Stuart & Associates The daughter of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory director Mel Stuart has long been the town's exec-class decorator, with clients like Seabiscuit director Gary Ross. ''Power means never having to say you're sorry for a decorating faux pas,'' says Stuart. Take that, Hildi!

MOST POWERFUL YOGA MAT CAA's Yoga isn't really about power -- but this is Hollywood, so it is. Which is why the No. 1 talent agency has logo'd mats for its agents. And yes, a CAA mat is thicker than all the other mats.
