Late Show With David LettermanIt doesn't look like becoming a father is going to cramp David Letterman's comic style. On Tuesday evening, less than 24 hours after the birth of Harry Joseph Letterman, the host was back on duty at ''The Late Show,'' cracking wise. ''First thing I took him home and dangled him over the balcony,'' Letterman told viewers.
The newborn (9 pounds, 11 ounces), born at an undisclosed location on Monday two minutes before midnight, is the first child for both Letterman and longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko. In a brief display of seriousness, Letterman said he named the boy after his own father, who died at 57, a year older than the host is now. ''I could never imagine ever being a part of something that turned out this beautiful,'' he said.
Later, however, he offered a list of the top 10 reasons he was excited to be a father. Reason No. 8: ''My used hairpieces make cuddly, fuzzy pals.'' No. 7: ''Only the most cold-hearted state trooper would ticket a guy with an adorable baby.'' And No. 1: ''There is now tangible evidence that I have had sex.''
