I enjoyed Gene Hackman's and Dustin Hoffman's reviews on favorite movies (''Hackman vs. Hoffman''), but I have to differ with a statement Hackman made. When discussing Tootsie, he said, ''There's no way in the world I would have touched that character.'' Well, one of my favorite movies with Hackman in it is The Birdcage. And he looks quite lovely, in a Carol Channing sort of way, wearing a dress. MARIA WITTE cestdragonfly@hotmail.com Jenison, Mich.
Trading Barbs
Your review of Barbra Streisand's The Movie Album was unfortunate (Music). To compare her to someone in a different genre of music is a waste. The review read like a vendetta with too many cheap shots at the artist included along with the droning dislike for the album itself. EW gives this release a D. I would argue that any fair critic would offer a better grade just for the sound of Ms. Streisand simply breathing. WILL KOLB Bratprince@aol.com Dallas
I've been a Streisand aficionado for 25-plus years and never thought I would agree with a negative review of one of her albums. Her latest album, which should've been titled Look How Much I (Still) Love My Husband: A Love Like Ours Vol. 2, is a sad, sad thing, and makes me wish it were released on vinyl so I could play it at 45 rpm and try to get some of the zam-bam-tingle that The Broadway Album gave me back in '85. The designers took actual molds of the Wellington cliffs and brought them back to their workshop, where they sprayed them with layers of polyurethane. The pieces were then assembled like a puzzle.
A STUNNING SEAT OF POWER
The Hennahs' biggest challenge in constructing the Minas Tirith throne room was right at their feet. Literally. It took 12 painters a month to make the 11,250-square-foot floor look like intricately patterned marble. The classical influences didn't stop there. ''One of the things we decided early on was that Minas Tirith would have a European feel,'' Dan says of the Corinthian columns and Moorish arches. Artists crafted the eight-foot polystyrene sculptures of the fallen kings of Minas Tirith to evoke ancient Greece and lend ''a grandeur'' to the room, he adds. ''It's about giving the city a formality and a history that people can relate to.''
