Master and Commander is based on a series of books that have a somewhat fanatical following. Reminds us of another shipboard adventure that has one or two (million) fans.
MASTER AND COMMANDER
Captain Aubrey's confidant is the ship's medical officer, Dr. Maturin (Paul Bettany).
The technobabble -- mizzenmast, futtock shrouds -- is decipherable only by the nautical-minded faithful.
To play Aubrey, Russell Crowe wears his fetching blond hair long.
In order to buy his crew time, Aubrey plays cat and mouse with the faster Acheron by racing around the Galapagos Islands.
STAR TREK
Captain Kirk's confidant is the ship's medical officer, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley).
The technobabble -- Jefferies tubes, warp nacelles -- is decipherable only by geeks.
To play Kirk, William Shatner wears his fetching brunet hairpiece short.
In Star Trek II, in order to buy his crew time, Kirk plays cat and mouse with Khan's faster U.S.S. Reliant by racing around a dead planet.
