Chase Edmunds (played by James Badge Dale)
HIS JOB Jack's partner and protégé
HIS LONG DAY There's nothing like having your irritable, occasionally murderous, drug-addicted boss discover that you're sleeping with his daughter. Or so Chase -- a boy-band-handsome new addition to the show -- is discovering. ''He was meant to reinvigorate the relationship between Jack and Kim,'' says Gordon.
Jack's initial reaction to the news of Chase's relationship was to ban him from field work, but that might not last. ''We have some real surprises for Chase down the line. I mean, REAL surprises,'' hints Gordon. ''It ultimately does test the veracity of Jack's statement that you can't do what they do and have a personal life.'' Hmm… maybe that cougar gets jealous.
Kim Bauer (played by Elisha Cuthbert)
HER JOB CTU Level One Analyst (i.e., she does a lot of computer searches)
HER LONG DAY Kim -- who's seen more perils than Pauline -- is meant to be more than a ditsy damsel in distress in season 3. Her babysitting days behind her, she now works with Daddy at CTU, where she's displaying some surprising competence (along with a shorter haircut). ''We were concerned about the transition,'' admits Gordon. ''But we have to be mindful that between seasons, three years elapsed. Three years to a 19-year-old is a huge amount of time.''
Still, Kim's dopier side seemed to reemerge earlier this season when she insisted on telling Jack about her relationship with Chase -- even as CTU received word of Salazar's killer-virus threat. ''That's something we regret slightly,'' Gordon says, explaining that the writers had intended Kim's dim-witted days to be over. Though she's been trapped behind a computer so far, she will eventually leave the office -- and maybe this time, she'll go for a few hours without getting kidnapped.
