Ramon Salazar (played by Vincent Laresca) and Hector Salazar (played by Joaquim de Almeida)

THEIR JOBS Mexican drug lords who moonlight as terrorists

THEIR LONG DAY Thanks to Jack Bauer, Ramon's locked in prison -- which hasn't stopped him from killing two people (including his own lawyer) in the first three episodes. Meanwhile, from his base in Mexico, Hector is threatening to launch germ warfare on L.A. if Ramon isn't sprung, and it sounds like the ploy will work. ''There's a tension between the brothers that will get reintroduced as they're reunited,'' Gordon says. (Does Hector's battered girlfriend, Claudia, have something to do with it?)

The threat faced in season 3 will expand beyond Salazar's virus. ''After six or seven episodes,'' says Gordon. ''you see that it's not going to be as monolithic as, 'There's a nuclear bomb in L.A., and you have to find it.' This is more complex and more challenging.'' In other words, prepare to see Jack Bauer sweat. Again.
