A prodigious saxophonist who died young, Tubby Hayes made his debut on an American label in 1962, with Terry, vibist Eddie Costa, and pianist Horace Parlan. He had a turbulent but coherent style that managed to combine Coltrane's prolixity, Sonny Rollins' clarity, and Zoot Sims' light-footed aggressiveness. He's due for rediscovery, and this very rare session-with four worthy additions since the original release-should help restore his reputation. B+
