And right now ''Elf'''s box office future looks sweeter than syrup on spaghetti. Christmas movies tend to perform well after opening in November (last year's ''The Santa Clause 2'' earned $139 million and 2000's ''Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas'' made $260 million), and with ''The Cat in the Hat'' and ''The Haunted Mansion'' the only kid-friendly competition on the horizon, ''Elf'' could easily continue to stuff its stockings straight through the holiday season.

''I'm just keeping my eye on what's directly ahead,'' Ferrell says, ''and that's all I can really worry about. That and getting as many tattoos as I can.''
