DOMESTIC INCIDENT Brown (in New York in February) says he and wife will handle the matter privately

Bobby Brown was charged with battery Wednesday after allegedly hitting his wife, Whitney Houston, in the face, according to the Associated Press. The singer turned himself in to police, and left court with Houston, the wire service reported. Brown is due in court for a preliminary hearing Jan. 7.

Brown's lawyer, Maurice Bennett, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that his client and Houston ''are trying to work it out as we speak, as husband and wife.'' Houston's lawyer, Mark Trigg, added that she's ''trying to resolve the matter privately.'' Houston called the police on Sunday after Brown allegedly hit the left side of her face with his open hand; police reported that Houston suffered a cut lip and a bruised cheek, according to AP.

Brown could face a year in jail and a $1,000 fine for the battery charge, but first-time domestic violence offenders often see their charges dismissed if they opt for counseling, according to AP. Brown served seven days in jail earlier this year for violating probation for his drunk driving conviction in 1996.
