Legacy: Hope Lange

Though blessed with glamorous good looks and an elegant stage presence, Hope Lange, 70, who died of an infection brought on by ischemic colitis Dec. 19 in Santa Monica, had a gift for both comedy and drama. During a career that spanned half a century, the Connecticut native received an Oscar nomination for her performance as a sexually abused high schooler in 1957's Peyton Place, showed off Emmy-winning comedic timing in TV's The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1968-70) and The New Dick Van Dyke Show (1971-74), and appeared in films as divergent as 1986's Blue Velvet and 1994's Clear and Present Danger.
