SEASON 8

Our guide to top ''Friends'' eps from season 8

THE ONE WHERE RACHEL TELLS ROSS
PLOT Rachel finally tells Ross that he's the father of her unborn baby. Ross being Ross, his reaction is more neurotic than paternal. CRITIQUE Though the show has long flirted with the idea that Ross and Rachel may get back together, an episode that ups the ante in their ''will they or won't they'' duet is a thrill. B+

THE ONE WITH THE VIDEOTAPE
PLOT Monica and Chandler return from their honeymoon, and Ross reveals that his video camera was running when he and Rachel conceived their child. CRITIQUE What sounds like the setup for a Paris Hilton-style sex tape is actually far more tasteful (and entertaining): This sly episode reveals a ruse the gang has used to woo their dates, which results in one of the show's funniest comic payoffs to date. But what's with Monica and Chandler trying to make new friends? Don't say Joey's not good enough anymore! B+

THE ONE WITH THE RUMOR
PLOT An old school buddy of Monica and Ross', Will, drops by the gang's Thanksgiving feast. Rachel thinks he's hot, but it turns out he hates her guts because he used to be overweight and she wouldn't give him the time of day. CREATIVE CASTING Aniston's real-life hubby, Brad Pitt, as the Rachel-despising Will. CRITIQUE This one may have been more exciting in theory (Aniston! Pitt! Together! But they hate each other!) than it is in practice, but Pitt proves he has sitcom-worthy chops, even when it comes to dissing his wife. A-

THE ONE WHERE RACHEL HAS A BABY PART 1
PLOT Rachel thinks her contractions are painful -- until Chandler's annoying ex-girlfriend, Janice (Maggie Wheeler), ends up sharing her hospital room. Imagine that grating voice during labor. Now, THAT'S painful. Monica convinces Chandler to start trying to have a baby. Like, immediately. In a hospital closet. CRITIQUE Seeing the usually perfectly coifed Rachel suffer the indignity of a semiprivate room, an ugly hospital gown, and Janice's high-pitched cackle is enough to make this one a keeper. But it's Chandler and Monica's decision to make a baby pronto that's both funny and poignant. And Elliott Gould's papa Geller is always a welcome presence. A-

THE ONE WHERE RACHEL HAS A BABY PART 2
PLOT Rachel finally gives birth to baby Emma, but there's more drama in store. When she spots Joey bending down to pick up the engagement ring Ross plans to give her, she thinks Joey's proposing -- and she accepts. CRITIQUE The wacky plot twists that must unfold to get Joey on bended knee seem forced, but the heartrending moment between Aniston and LeBlanc is worth it. And it sweetly sets up the next season's Rachel-Joey romance. A-
