It has an Odyssey-through-the-backwoods vastness, yet you may not be deeply moved by one minute of it. Inman (Jude Law) deserts the Confederate Army and tries to get back to Ada (Nicole Kidman). Some of his encounters have a malevolent and exciting force, yet there's got to be more to epic characters than the purity of their devotion.
