Docu Drama

A filmmaker unearths new evidence

The drama of potential Oscar contender ''Capturing the Friedmans'' (on DVD Jan. 27) may continue in court. The documentary's director, Andrew Jarecki, is assisting film subject Jesse Friedman in trying to overturn a 1988 child molestation conviction. (Friedman and his father, Arnold, who died in 1995, pleaded guilty to allegedly abusing Arnold's computer students.) Based on interviews with police, attorneys, and alleged victims, the filmmaker is planning to file a motion asserting that the Friedmans and their lawyers were not informed that many students said they didn't recall any abuse or recalled only after intense interrogation. ''You can't deny that justice wasn't served,'' says Jarecki.
