Will the third time prove the charm for ''The Lord of the Rings''? The trilogy's final installment, ''The Return of the King,'' is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' most-nominated movie this year, picking up 11 nods, including Best Picture and Best Director (for Peter Jackson). It was followed by ''Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,'' with 10 nods (including Best Picture and Best Director, for Peter Weir). Other favorites going into the race were, ''Cold Mountain,'' which earned seven nominations (but not Best Picture), ''Seabiscuit'' (seven nominations, led by Best Picture), and ''Mystic River,'' which earned six nods (including Best Picture and Best Director, for Clint Eastwood). ''Lost in Translation'' won four nominations, including three for Sofia Coppola (Best Picture, for which she's nominated as producer; Best Director, and Best Screenplay).

Big surprises included nominations for Johnny Depp as Best Actor (for his crowd-pleasing ''Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl'' performance) and 13-year-old New Zealander Keisha Castle-Hughes for Best Actress for the import ''Whale Rider.''

Three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver and Academy president Frank Pierson announced this year's honorees at a crack-of-dawn press conference Tuesday at the Academy's Beverly Hills headquarters. The Oscars will be handed out Feb. 29.
