Josh Groban moved ''Closer'' to the 2 million sales mark this week, thanks to a sales promotion at Target stores that sent the crooner's album shooting up 10 spots to the top of the Billboard chart. Billboard credits the chain store's two-CDs-for-$20 campaign, which centered on ''Closer,'' with a 34 percent sales boost for the nine-week-old album. ''Closer'' sold 110,000 copies last week, according to SoundScan, finishing at No. 1 during a week that saw sales fall by as much as one-third for the rest of the top-10 discs.
''The Diary of Alicia Keys'' saw sales slip 12 percent to 102,000, but held on to the No. 2 slot. Last week's champ, OutKast's ''Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,'' dropped to third place on sales of 101,700. No Doubt's ''The Singles 1992-2003'' saw sales slide to 89,000, though the album gained a chart position to finish fourth. Similarly, Toby Keith's ''Shock'N Y'all'' jumped from No. 9 to No. 5 despite a sales dip to 82,000.
Sliding two slots to No. 6 was ''The Very Best of Sheryl Crow.'' ''NOW That's What I Call Music! Vol. 14'' dropped four notches to No. 7. Climbing two rungs to No. 8 was Ruben Studdard's ''Soulful.'' Evanescence's ''Fallen'' fell two to No. 9, and Jay-Z's ''The Black Album'' lost four places to land at No. 10.
