Crime is down so much in New York City that there seem to be more primetime New York crime dramas than criminals. Nonetheless, the city will have make room for one more police-show spinoff. ''CSI: New York,'' the third series in the franchise, is expected to debut this fall, Variety reports. Anthony Zuiker, who created the original ''CSI: Crime Scene Investigation'' will write the pilot and run the new show, and Jerry Bruckheimer will produce this one as well as the other two.
Zuiker has been considering a third ''CSI'' ever since ''CSI: Miami'' became an instant hit two years ago; the Las Vegas-set original remains TV's most popular drama. The ''CSI'' braintrust considered several possible locations, including New Orleans, before finally opting for the Big Apple over the Big Easy. No word on who will star or whether the characters will be introduced on one of the existing shows. There's also been buzz that the new show would introduce a twist to the forensic format, but so far, CBS isn't offering any clues.
