Jessica Simpson will play ballplayer's wife. She'll play a high school sweetheart in the docudrama ''Walk On''

Jessica Simpson's movie debut will be a ''Walk On'' role, literally. Variety reports that she'll costar in ''Walk On,'' a baseball biopic to be directed by Walter Hill (''48 HRS.''). It's the story of David Clyde, recruited in 1973 by the nearly bankrupt Texas Rangers when he was still a senior in high school. The ''Newlyweds'' reality star will play Clyde's high school sweetheart, who becomes his wife. Also in talks to costar are Keith Carradine, singer Sophie B. Hawkins, and ''Grounded for Life'''s Donal Logue. The film would shoot sometime in 2005. No word on whether Simpson will prepare for the role by actually learning how to keep a clean house.

The singer and her crooner hubby Nick Lachey are both dipping their toes into acting. She recently signed a deal to star in a comedy pilot for ABC. This week, Lachey also signed a pilot deal with ABC that may land him in a comedy or a drama. Lachey's deal includes the possibility of making movies for Disney, ABC's parent company. First, however, he'll be dodging airborne panties when he plays Tom Jones in the Feb. 15 episode of NBC's ''American Dreams.''
