R&B legend James Brown was arrested on domestic violence charges Wednesday afternoon in South Carolina, according to the Associated Press. The 70-year-old performer was set to appear at a bail hearing after being booked at Aiken County Jail, the wire service reported. A spokesperson for Brown at his business office declined EW.com's request for comment on the arrest.
Brown spent two and a half years in prison after a drug and assault conviction in 1988, and was convicted of using a weapon under the influence in 1998, which led to a 90-day-stint in a drug treatment program. Brown was feted alongside Itzhak Perlman, and Carol Burnett last month at the Kennedy Center Honors.
