Catching up with key characters on The Sopranos

SPOILER ALERT This article contains hints about the new season

Tony Soprano LAST SEASON Considering himself healthy, Tony (James Gandolfini) left therapy. Considering Tony a bastard, Carmela (Edie Falco) demanded a separation. THIS SEASON Tony's living in his mother's old house, and dealing with a wave of gangsters released from prison, trouble in the New York family, and a reunion with Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco).

Carmela LAST SEASON After the collapse of her unconsummated flirtation with Furio (Federico Castelluccio), who fled back to Italy, she threw Tony out of the house. THIS SEASON The overwhelmed single mom is busy filing for divorce while trying to pry cash from her stubborn and vengeful husband. Nevertheless, there will be time to start dating.

Meadow & AJ LAST SEASON Meadow (Jamie-Lynn DiScala) volunteered at a Bronx legal-aid center; AJ (Robert Iler) got involved with a rough crowd, sucked at school, and moped a lot. THIS SEASON While Meadow continues to overachieve at Columbia (with her dental-student boyfriend), the increasingly rebellious AJ flunks out with his mother.

Janice LAST SEASON Tony's sister (Aida Turturro) helped (actually, forced might be a better word) a grieving Bobby Bacala (Steven R. Schirripa) through his wife's sudden death in an automobile accident. THIS SEASON Now firmly ensconced in Bobby's family, she's perfectly positioned to reprise her favorite role, Lady Macbeth.

Christopher LAST SEASON Tony began grooming his volatile nephew (Michael Imperioli)now straight after a stint in rehab as his trusted confidant and right-hand man. THIS SEASON Chris becomes impatient because, despite his new influence, Paulie (Tony Sirico) and the other captains continue to treat him like a lackey.

Adriana LAST SEASON In a memorable scene, forced by the FBI to choose between jail and betrayal, Christopher's fiancee (Drea de Matteo) coughed up more than just information. THIS SEASON Increasingly devastated by her rat status, she tries to befriend her FBI handler, the chilly and dour Agent Sanseverino (Karen Young).

Johnny Sack LAST SEASON The New York family's consigliere (Vincent Curatola) fumed after Tony backed away from a deal to whack Sack's boss, Carmine Lupertazzi (Tony Lip). THIS SEASON You can add another name to Sack's growing list of enemies: the Miami-based Carmine Jr. (Ray Abruzzo), who Sack feels is encroaching on his power.

Uncle Junior LAST SEASON Grouchy and confined to his home, Junior (Dominic Chianese) managed to dodge a racketeering rap after his henchmen intimidated one of the jurors. THIS SEASON Uncle June's increasingly bizarre behavior has the family wondering whether that senility shtick he developed for the trial was merely an act.
