Stiller also seems to enjoy blurring the line between his loser-nerd characters and himself by spinning out a tongue-in-cheek, jerky-guy public persona -- a bit he pulled off brilliantly at the Academy Awards alongside frequent costar Owen Wilson, the laid-back Oscar to Stiller's fussy Felix. (See cover story on page 22.) ''Some people thought Ben was actually miffed at Owen for real,'' says Roach. ''It was classic Ben. A little like what he did on the Larry David show. He expects a certain amount of respect and appreciation. He doesn't get it...and then he blows up.''

Call him the Old Faithful of slow-burn comedy: You can always count on the next explosion to come along any minute.
