Shortly after divorced doc Michael Grant moves to a new town, a young girl suddenly dies in his care. Then the girl's father perishes in a mysterious fire after showing bizarre symptoms unlike anything in the textbooks. Michael suspects he's caught the same illness -- though his colleagues are skeptical. Huyler, the author of a 1999 memoir about his day job as an ER physician, has penned a thoughtful novel with a mild case of the medical thriller. For all its genuine creepiness, though, Laws ends up as the literary equivalent of the sniffles; given the potential, wouldn't you prefer a bout of full-blown Crichtonitis?
